Senior Researcher Bioinformatics

Data analysis

What are you going to do as a Senior Researcher Bioinformatics?

As Senior Researcher Bioinformatics, you will lead the bioinformatics team (3fte). The team is part of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry in the Biotechnology Research department. This department performs a wide range of research activities such as sequencing technology development. This requires close collaboration with colleagues from within the department but also with phytopathologists, cell biologists, breeders, and statisticians.

As part of R&D, you are at the forefront of research, which is often accompanied by vast amounts of data. With insights generated by analysis of aforementioned data, you facilitate the breeding process and enable the breeders to create the best vegetable varieties of the world.

Initially, you will work on data analysis with a focus on next-generation sequencing data. This includes the development of analysis pipelines, including user interfaces and databases, data visualization and optimising in-house developed algorithims and workflows. At a later stage, your responsibilities will extend towards leading the Bioinformatics team.

Your power

You are a team leader and know how to translate content into action and streamline existing R&D processes. You are familiar with software development and data analysis. You have the drive to dig into complex data sets and the ability to continue until you have found the answers you are looking for. You keep looking for new possibilities and you share your ideas with the team. Furthermore, you have excellent communication skills and are a strong team player.

In short, you have:

  • A PhD degree with preferably 2-5 years working experience in bioinformatics-, computer science- or data analysis-related fields;
  • Project management experience;
  • Above average software development and Linux skills;
  • Confident in the scripting language Python (or other languages and willingness to learn Python);
  • Knowledge of distributed source code version control systems, e.g. git or mercurial;
  • Knowledge of plant biology is preferred;
  • Fluent in English (Dutch language skills are a plus).

Proficiency in high-performance computing and sequence data analysis is highly desirable. Basic database knowledge (SQL/NoSQL) and web application development (Python flask or similar) are a plus.

Our power

Enza Zaden is a vegetable breeding company that develops vegetable varieties. We produce and sell the seeds of these varieties all over the world. Both for conventional and organic growers.

Our goal is to grant people access to healthy vegetables. Anywhere in the world. Every day, more than 460 million people worldwide eat our vegetables. So, we are getting there ... but there is still enough work to be done! Of course, we look further than present needs.In 2050, when there will be about 10 billion inhabitants on our planet, we also want to make sure that people have access to healthy vegetables.

To achieve this, our vegetable breeders work with the best that nature offers. Supported by state-of-the-art technologies to speed up our breeding process. That is necessary, because currently the development of a new vegetable variety takes at least 6 years. We focus on higher yield, resistance to diseases and pests and climate extremes such as heat and drought. And on taste, shelf life and nutrients. The results? Strong, healthy tasty and climate-proof vegetable varieties with higher yield per square meter and less need of crop protection products or fertilizer. In short, sustainability is truly in our DNA.

Our head office in Enkhuizen is our home base, but we have colleagues all over the world. Enza Zaden is an independent family business, where around 2000 employees from more than 40 nationalities closely work together in international teams.
